HEARTS and SOILS

HEARTS and SOILS

Luke 8: 4-15

 by Rev. Richard Jones

Matthew 13:1-3 (ESV)

1  That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea.
2  And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach.
3  And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow.

Matthew 13:34 (ESV)

34  All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable.

THE  DIFFERENT DIRT

Luke 8:4-8 (ESV)

4  And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable,
5  “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it.6  And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.
7  And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.
8  And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

THE PARABLE PURPOSE

Luke 8:9-10 (ESV)

9  And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant,
10  he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’

Matthew 13:13-16 (ESV)

13  This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14  Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: “‘“You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.”15  For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’
16  But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.

THE HEARING HEARTS

Luke 8:11-15 (ESV)

11  Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12  The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13  And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. 14  And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15  As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.

1 Corinthians 2:14 (ESV)

14  The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

1 John 2:19 (ESV)

19  They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.

James 2:19 (ESV)

19  You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

1 John 2:15-17 (ESV)

15  Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16  For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.           17  And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

James 1:17 (ESV)

17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
