BORN and BELIEVING

1 John 5: 1-12

THE DEMAND OF GOD’S LOVE
1 John 5:1-3 (ESV)

1  Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.
2  By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Mark 12:28-31 (ESV)
28  And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29  Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30  And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31  The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

John 14:15 (ESV)
15  “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)
28  Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

THE DEMONSTRATION OF GOD’S LOVE
1 John 5:4-5 (ESV)

4  For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
5  Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

John 16:33 (ESV)
33  I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Revelation 12:10-11 (ESV)
10  And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.
11  And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.

THE DISPLAY OF GOD’S LOVE
1 John 5:6-9 (ESV)

6  This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7  For there are three that testify:
8  the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. 9  If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son.

Matthew 3:16-17 (ESV)
16  And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
17  and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

John 19:33-35 (ESV)
33  But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
34  But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
35  He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe.

Matthew 27:45-53 (ESV)
45  Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47  And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48  And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. 49  But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50  And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. 51  And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52  The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53  and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

THE DENIAL OF GOD’S LOVE
1 John 5:10-12 (ESV)

10  Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11  And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12  Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Romans 8:15-16 (ESV)
15  For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
16  The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
