mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Introduction\u201d\u201d<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Let\u201d\u2122s have a contest.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>How long can you hold your breath?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Everyone raise your hand and hold it up for as long as you can hold your breath.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ready?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>1, 2, 3\u201d\u201dHOLD.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Oxygen<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Without it, we will die in just minutes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or, if the quality of the air we breathe is compromised, it can become difficult to breath because the oxygen content is diminished\u201d\u201dlike when we\u201d\u2122re close to a fire and there\u201d\u2122s a lot of smoke in the air.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or, if there are poisonous gases that replace the oxygen and suddenly our lungs are not just starved for oxygen, but actually attacked by chemicals that destroy the capacity of our lungs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">We were watching <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The Unit<\/em> last night\u201d\u201da show about an elite Special Forces Black Ops team.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The small town where they were all stationed was suddenly under attack by terrorists.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Suddenly, the citizens of the town (including The Unit and their families) couldn\u201d\u2122t breathe.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Kids were passing out on the soccer field and in the hallways of the schools. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Grown men and women were falling down in the parking lots at work coming back from their lunch break.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was mass pandemonium and fear.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Chloride gas had been released through the water system of a town, infiltrating the community through any water spigot in use, as well as being sprayed into the air by sprinkler systems across time.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The gas permeated the air and scores died.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Unit saved many lives and then went to work to stop the release of the gas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We must have oxygen in order to live through even the next 5 minutes<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">As we look at Matthew 18:11-35, Jesus wants us to come away understanding this truth:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Forgiveness is oxygen for the soul.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Without it, our souls suffocate and become weak and eventually die.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>With it, our souls breathe easy and live with strength. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">4<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Truths<\/strong> about forgiveness:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>1.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Father Pursues Us with Forgiveness.<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">(11-14, NKJV)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The sheep who has wandered away represents all of us before God saved us, when we were living our way in sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">The Father pursues us with His forgiveness in Jesus!<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Shepherd<\/span> takes the initiative to find the sheep, NOT the other way around.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>What a loving and gracious and forgiving God\u201d\u201dwhose forgiveness <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">initiates<\/span><\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Romans 5:6,8\u201d\u201d \u201cWhen we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners . . . But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">John 6:44\u201d\u201d\u201cFor people can\u201d\u2122t come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws them to Me . . . .\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Jesus forgave<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"> . . .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The woman caught in adultery (John 8:3-11)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The woman who anointed his feet with oil <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; text-indent: 0.5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">(Luke 7:44-50)\u201d\u201danother slut, by the way!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The criminal on the cross (Luke 23:39-43)\u201d\u201dwe\u201d\u2122ll see Jesus interact with this guy, who had done all manner of junk, in a few minutes during Communion).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The people who crucified Him (Luke 23:34)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">The Father pursues us with His forgiveness in Jesus!<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">First, and foremost, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">GOD\u201d\u2122S<\/span> forgiveness is oxygen for our souls!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Without it, we suffocate in the guilt of our own sin.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">But praise His name, <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the Father pursues us with His forgiveness in Jesus!<\/span><\/em> (By the way, if you\u201d\u2122re here this morning, listening to this message and you haven\u201d\u2122t received the gift of God\u201d\u2122s forgiveness\u201d\u201dmake no mistake, the Father is right now pursuing YOU with that forgiveness that can be yours through simple faith in Jesus!)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I Must Forgive Others like the Father has Forgiven Me.<\/span> <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>(21-35, NLT)<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cThe rabbis taught that people should forgive those who offend them\u201d\u201dbut only three times.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Peter, trying to be especially generous, asked Jesus if seven (the \u201cperfect\u201d number) was enough times to forgive someone.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But Jesus\u201d\u2122 answer made it clear \u201cthat we shouldn\u201d\u2122t even keep track of how many times we forgive someone.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We should always forgive those who are truly repentant, no matter how many times they ask\u201d (Life Application Bible, 1572).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">How do YOU do in the forgiveness department?<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cBecause God has forgiven all our sins, we should not withhold forgiveness from others.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Realizing how completely Christ has forgiven us should produce a free and generous attitude of forgiveness toward others.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When we don\u201d\u2122t forgive others, we are setting ourselves outside and above Christ\u201d\u2122s law of love\u201d (Life Application Bible, 1573).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Ephesians 4:31-5:2\u201d\u201d\u201dGet rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behavior.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Follow God\u201d\u2122s example in everything you do, because you are His dear children.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">gave Himself as a sacrifice to take away your sins.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">It is not insignificant that is was PETER who asked this question about forgiveness, prompting this parable from Jesus.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Peter would soon deny three times that he even knew Jesus\u201d\u201dand cuss those who so accused him!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, in another amazing act of grace, another occasion of forgiveness pursuing the one who had sinned against Jesus\u201d\u201dJohn 21 tells us of how Jesus initiated the encounter and then graciously extended His forgiveness to Peter, who humbly received it!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cThese are Jesus\u201d\u2122 guidelines for dealing with those who sin against us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They were meant for (1) Christians, not unbelievers, (2) sins committed against <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">you<\/em> and not others, and (3) conflict resolution in the context of the church, not the community at large.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus\u201d\u2122 words are not a license for a frontal attack on every person who hurts or slights us . . . They are designed to reconcile those who disagree so that all Christians can live in harmony\u201d (Life Application Bible, 1572).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; text-indent: 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">So, what is the <strong>context<\/strong> I mentioned a moment ago?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>What do we find sandwiching these verses in from both sides?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">Forgiveness<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">\u201d\u201dboth the Father\u201d\u2122s (11-14) and the way we\u201d\u2122re to forgive others (21-35). <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>That is NOT by accident!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">In fact, Jesus\u201d\u2122 principles for relating to one another are what prompted Peter\u201d\u2122s question about forgiveness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Peter understood that Jesus was teaching us to <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pursue others with forgiveness just like the Father does!<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The heartbeat of verse 15-20 is just that\u201d\u201dwe go to the one who offends us with a heart of forgiveness toward them concerning whatever the offense, desiring with all of our heart to have the relationship reconciled.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, just like God never forces anyone to accept His gift of grace and forgiveness, we can\u201d\u2122t force reconciliation in any relationship.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">A person must acknowledge that they have sinned against God and need a Savior, need forgiveness before he\/she can accept God\u201d\u2122s free gift of forgiveness through faith in Jesus\u201d\u201dit\u201d\u2122s not automatic, because God wants a relationship with us, not our religious performance\/conformity<\/em>!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">A relationship is always a 2-way street\u201d\u201dor it is no relationship<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">And so, we are to work for reconciliation when things go wrong in our relationships.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And notice\u201d\u201dwe\u201d\u2122re to keep the whole process as private as possible, because, again, the goal is forgiveness\/reconciliation, not humiliation of the person.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, this passage deals with what has been called \u201cChurch Discipline\u201d\u201d\u201dif the person won\u201d\u2122t listen to you, or even you and a couple of other believers, then the church must be involved, Jesus says.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But again\u201d\u201dthe clear context and atmosphere is that of forgiveness that pursues the offender and wants reconciliation more than anything!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>So that as church leadership gets involved, that should still be the focus and attitude.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And hopefully, the person will feel God\u201d\u2122s love and forgiveness through us and be reconciled!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Matthew 18:17 (from The Message):<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIf he won\u201d\u2122t listen to the church, you\u201d\u2122ll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer again God\u201d\u2122s forgiving love.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Only when the person refuses to receive forgiveness (and, obviously, acknowledge their fault) does the church take action and \u201ctreat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector\u201d.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>What does that look like?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Well, first off, it means making it clear that the person is no longer regarded as a member of the body of Christ\u201d\u201dBECAUSE he\/she is not acting like the Father and is ignoring the grace\/forgiveness being offered to them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, I believe, that it also means that <strong><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">we continue to relate to that person very intentionally<\/em><\/strong>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus was a friend of tax collectors and sinners\u201d\u201dHe spent most of His time with thieves and sluts and liars, seeking to extend God\u201d\u2122s grace to them!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And so, we should do the same!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In this case, it would probably need to be someone other than the one who was offended and started the whole process.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Someone else in the church could probably be more effective in winning the unrepentant person back.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; text-indent: 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">James 5:19-20\u201d\u201d \u201cMy dear friends, if you know people who have wandered off from God\u201d\u2122s truth, don\u201d\u2122t write them off.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Go after them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Get them back and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God.\u201d (The Message)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">I must pursue others with forgiveness like the<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">Father does!<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">Just like the terrorists in that episode of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The Unit, <\/em>the world in which we live seeks to poison our souls by infusing bitterness and anger and unforgiveness into every breath we take.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our own flesh\/sinful nature will naturally give off toxic gases that will destroy your soul\u201d\u2122s lungs and suffocate the life of the Spirit in your heart, if you let it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This morning, <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Jesus wants to purge the air you breathe and breathe into your soul the life-giving oxygen of forgiveness<\/em>!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;
