And although they covered him with clothes, he could not get warm. 2\u00a0 Therefore his servants said to him, \u201cLet a young woman be sought for my lord the king, and let her wait on the king and be in his service. Let her lie in your arms, that my lord the king may be warm.\u201d 3\u00a0 So they sought for a beautiful young woman throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 4\u00a0 The young woman was very beautiful, and she was of service to the king and attended to him, but the king knew her not. 5\u00a0 Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, \u201cI will be king.\u201d And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. 6\u00a0 His father had never at any time displeased him by asking, \u201cWhy have you done thus and so?\u201d He was also a very handsome man, and he was born next after Absalom. 7\u00a0 He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest. And they followed Adonijah and helped him. 8\u00a0 But Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and Nathan the prophet and Shimei and Rei and David\u2019s mighty men were not with Adonijah. 9\u00a0 Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened cattle by the Serpent\u2019s Stone, which is beside En-rogel, and he invited all his brothers, the king\u2019s sons, and all the royal officials of Judah, 10\u00a0 but he did not invite Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the mighty men or Solomon his brother.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A WISE PROPHET<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Kings 1:11-14 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n11\u00a0 Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, \u201cHave you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king and David our lord does not know it? 12\u00a0 Now therefore come, let me give you advice, that you may save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13\u00a0 Go in at once to King David, and say to him, \u2018Did you not, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, \u201cSolomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne\u201d? Why then is Adonijah king?\u2019 14\u00a0 Then while you are still speaking with the king, I also will come in after you and confirm your words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A CONCERNED MOTHER<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Kings 1:15-21 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n15\u00a0 So Bathsheba went to the king in his chamber (now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was attending to the king).<br \/>\n16\u00a0 Bathsheba bowed and paid homage to the king, and the king said, \u201cWhat do you desire?\u201d 17\u00a0 She said to him, \u201cMy lord, you swore to your servant by the LORD your God, saying, \u2018Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.\u2019 18\u00a0 And now, behold, Adonijah is king, although you, my lord the king, do not know it. 19\u00a0 He has sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of the army, but Solomon your servant he has not invited. 20\u00a0 And now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21\u00a0 Otherwise it will come to pass, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be counted offenders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A LOYAL FRIEND<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Kings 1:22-27 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n22\u00a0 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.<br \/>\n23\u00a0 And they told the king, \u201cHere is Nathan the prophet.\u201d And when he came in before the king, he bowed before the king, with his face to the ground.<br \/>\n24\u00a0 And Nathan said, \u201cMy lord the king, have you said, \u2018Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne\u2019? 25\u00a0 For he has gone down this day and has sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king\u2019s sons, the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, \u2018Long live King Adonijah!\u2019 26\u00a0 But me, your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he has not invited.<br \/>\n27\u00a0 Has this thing been brought about by my lord the king and you have not told your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A DETERMINED KING<\/u><u><br \/>\n<\/u>1 Kings 1:28-37 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n28\u00a0 Then King David answered, \u201cCall Bathsheba to me.\u201d So she came into the king\u2019s presence and stood before the king. 29\u00a0 And the king swore, saying, \u201cAs the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of every adversity,<br \/>\n30\u00a0 as I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel, saying, \u2018Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place,\u2019 even so will I do this day.\u201d 31\u00a0 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground and paid homage to the king and said, \u201cMay my lord King David live forever!\u201d 32\u00a0 King David said, \u201cCall to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.\u201d So they came before the king. 33\u00a0 And the king said to them, \u201cTake with you the servants of your lord and have Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon. 34\u00a0 And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet there anoint him king over Israel. Then blow the trumpet and say, \u2018Long live King Solomon!\u2019 35\u00a0 You shall then come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne, for he shall be king in my place. And I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.\u201d 36\u00a0 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, \u201cAmen! May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say so.<br \/>\n37\u00a0 As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>AN APPOINTED REGENT<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Kings 1:38-40 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n38\u00a0 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David\u2019s mule and brought him to Gihon. 39\u00a0 There Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, \u201cLong live King Solomon!\u201d 40\u00a0 And all the people went up after him, playing on pipes, and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth was split by their noise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>TERRIFIED GUESTS<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Kings 1:41-50 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n41\u00a0 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished feasting. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, \u201cWhat does this uproar in the city mean?\u201d 42\u00a0 While he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. And Adonijah said, \u201cCome in, for you are a worthy man and bring good news.\u201d<br \/>\n43\u00a0 Jonathan answered Adonijah, \u201cNo, for our lord King David has made Solomon king, 44\u00a0 and the king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites. And they had him ride on the king\u2019s mule. 45\u00a0 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon, and they have gone up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise that you have heard. 46\u00a0 Solomon sits on the royal throne. 47\u00a0 Moreover, the king\u2019s servants came to congratulate our lord King David, saying, \u2018May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than yours, and make his throne greater than your throne.\u2019 And the king bowed himself on the bed. 48\u00a0 And the king also said, \u2018Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has granted someone to sit on my throne this day, my own eyes seeing it.\u2019\u201d<br \/>\n49\u00a0 Then all the guests of Adonijah trembled and rose, and each went his own way.<br \/>\n50\u00a0 And Adonijah feared Solomon. So he arose and went and took hold of the horns of the altar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A GOOD DAD<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Kings 2:1-4 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1\u00a0 When David\u2019s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, 2\u00a0 \u201cI am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, 3\u00a0 and keep the charge of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, 4\u00a0 that the LORD may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, \u2018If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Chronicles 29:26-28 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n26\u00a0 Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. 27\u00a0 The time that he reigned over Israel was forty years. He reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.<br \/>\n28\u00a0 Then he died at a good age, full of days, riches, and honor.
