Richard Jones<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A CHANGE IN KINGS<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>1 Samuel 31 &#8211; 2 Samuel 2:7<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-7763-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossroadchristianfellowship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/04-02-2023.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossroadchristianfellowship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/04-02-2023.mp3\">http:\/\/www.crossroadchristianfellowship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/04-02-2023.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A TOTAL DEFEAT<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>1 Samuel 31:1-7 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1\u00a0 Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2\u00a0 And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. 3\u00a0 The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. 4\u00a0 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, \u201cDraw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.\u201d But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5\u00a0 And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him. 6\u00a0 Thus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day together. 7\u00a0 And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. And the Philistines came and lived in them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A TOTAL DISGRACE<\/u><u><br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 31:8-13 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n8\u00a0 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.<br \/>\n9\u00a0 So they cut off his head and stripped off his armor and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to the house of their idols and to the people.<br \/>\n10\u00a0 They put his armor in the temple of Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan. 11\u00a0 But when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,<br \/>\n12\u00a0 all the valiant men arose and went all night and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there.<br \/>\n13\u00a0 And they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh and fasted seven days.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A TOTAL DISRESPECT<br \/>\n<\/u>2 Samuel 1: 1-10 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<b>2 Samuel 1:1-9 (ESV) <\/b><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1 <\/span><\/sup><span class=\"ind\">\u00a0After the death of Saul, when David had returned from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul\u2019s camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0David said to him, \u201cWhere do you come from?\u201d And he said to him, \u201cI have escaped from the camp of Israel.\u201d<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And David said to him, \u201cHow did it go? Tell me.\u201d And he answered, \u201cThe people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.\u201d<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Then David said to the young man who told him, \u201cHow do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?\u201d<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">6 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And the young man who told him said, \u201cBy chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">7 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, \u2018Here I am.\u2019<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he said to me, \u2018Who are you?\u2019 I answered him, \u2018I am an Amalekite.\u2019<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">9 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he said to me, \u2018Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.\u2019 <\/span>10\u00a0 So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT<\/u> <u><br \/>\n<\/u>2 Samuel 1:11-17 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n11\u00a0 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him.<br \/>\n12\u00a0 And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 13\u00a0 And David said to the young man who told him, \u201cWhere do you come from?\u201d And he answered, \u201cI am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.\u201d 14\u00a0 David said to him, \u201cHow is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the LORD\u2019s anointed?\u201d<br \/>\n15\u00a0 Then David called one of the young men and said, \u201cGo, execute him.\u201d And he struck him down so that he died.<br \/>\n16\u00a0 And David said to him, \u201cYour blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, \u2018I have killed the LORD\u2019s anointed.\u2019\u201d<br \/>\n17\u00a0 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A TOTAL DIFFERENCE<br \/>\n<\/u>2 Samuel 2:1-7 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1\u00a0 After this David inquired of the LORD, \u201cShall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?\u201d And the LORD said to him, \u201cGo up.\u201d David said, \u201cTo which shall I go up?\u201d And he said, \u201cTo Hebron.\u201d 2\u00a0 So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 3\u00a0 And David brought up his men who were with him, everyone with his household, and they lived in the towns of Hebron. 4\u00a0 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David, \u201cIt was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,\u201d 5\u00a0 David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, \u201cMay you be blessed by the LORD, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him. 6\u00a0 Now may the LORD show steadfast love and faithfulness to you. And I will do good to you because you have done this thing. 7\u00a0 Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Story of David (Sermon series) \u00a0by Rev.
