Richard Jones<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><u>SHOWN MERCY TO SHOW MERCY<\/u><\/b><\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>1 Samuel 23:19 &#8211; 24:22<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-7692-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossroadchristianfellowship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/02-19-2023.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossroadchristianfellowship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/02-19-2023.mp3\">http:\/\/www.crossroadchristianfellowship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/02-19-2023.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A DEPLORABLE ACT<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>1 Samuel 23:19-24 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n19\u00a0 Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, \u201cIs not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah, which is south of Jeshimon?<br \/>\n20\u00a0 Now come down, O king, according to all your heart\u2019s desire to come down, and our part shall be to surrender him into the king\u2019s hand.\u201d<br \/>\n21\u00a0 And Saul said, \u201cMay you be blessed by the LORD, for you have had compassion on me. 22\u00a0 Go, make yet more sure. Know and see the place where his foot is, and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he is very cunning.<br \/>\n23\u00a0 See therefore and take note of all the lurking places where he hides, and come back to me with sure information. Then I will go with you. And if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.\u201d<br \/>\n24\u00a0 And they arose and went to Ziph ahead of Saul. Now David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah to the south of Jeshimon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A DESPERATE SITUATION<\/u><u><br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 23:25-29 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n25\u00a0 And Saul and his men went to seek him. And David was told, so he went down to the rock and lived in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.<br \/>\n26\u00a0 Saul went on one side of the mountain, and David and his men on the other side of the mountain. And David was hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them, 27\u00a0 a messenger came to Saul, saying, \u201cHurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid against the land.\u201d<br \/>\n28\u00a0 So Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape.<br \/>\n29\u00a0\u00a0 And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of Engedi.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>The Lord Upholds My Life<\/i><\/b><i><br \/>\nTo the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Maskil of David, when the <\/i><i>Ziphites<\/i><i> went and told Saul, \u201cIs not David Hiding among us?\u201d<\/i><br \/>\n<strong>Psalm 54:1-5 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1 O God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might. 2\u00a0 O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth. 3\u00a0 For strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves. Selah 4\u00a0 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life. 5\u00a0 He will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A DESIRABLE OPPORTUNITY<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 24:1-7 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1\u00a0\u00a0 When Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, \u201cBehold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.\u201d 2\u00a0 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Wildgoats\u2019 Rocks.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 3\u00a0 And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave. 4\u00a0 And the men of David said to him, \u201cHere is the day of which the LORD said to you, \u2018Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.\u2019\u201d Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul\u2019s robe. 5\u00a0 And afterward David\u2019s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul\u2019s robe. 6\u00a0 He said to his men, \u201cThe LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD\u2019s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the LORD\u2019s anointed.\u201d 7\u00a0 So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A DECLARED LOYALTY<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 24:8-15 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n8\u00a0 Afterward David also arose and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, \u201cMy lord the king!\u201d And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth and paid homage. 9\u00a0 And David said to Saul, \u201cWhy do you listen to the words of men who say, \u2018Behold, David seeks your harm\u2019? 10\u00a0 Behold, this day your eyes have seen how the LORD gave you today into my hand in the cave. And some told me to kill you, but I spared you. I said, \u2018I will not put out my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD\u2019s anointed.\u2019 11\u00a0 See, my father, see the corner of your robe in my hand. For by the fact that I cut off the corner of your robe and did not kill you, you may know and see that there is no wrong or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt my life to take it. 12\u00a0 May the LORD judge between me and you, may the LORD avenge me against you, but my hand shall not be against you. 13\u00a0 As the proverb of the ancients says, \u2018Out of the wicked comes wickedness.\u2019 But my hand shall not be against you. 14\u00a0 After whom has the king of Israel come out? After whom do you pursue? After a dead dog! After a flea! 15\u00a0 May the LORD therefore be judge and give sentence between me and you, and see to it and plead my cause and deliver me from your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A DECEPTIVE CHANGE<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 24:16-22 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n16\u00a0 As soon as David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, \u201cIs this your voice, my son David?\u201d And Saul lifted up his voice and wept.<br \/>\n17\u00a0 He said to David, \u201cYou are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil.<br \/>\n18\u00a0 And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the LORD put me into your hands. 19\u00a0 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe? So may the LORD reward you with good for what you have done to me this day. 20\u00a0 And now, behold, I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand. 21\u00a0 Swear to me therefore by the LORD that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father\u2019s house.\u201d 22\u00a0 And David swore this to Saul. Then Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Peter 2:22-23 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n22\u00a0 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.<br \/>\n23\u00a0 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Story of David (Sermon series) \u00a0by Rev.
