Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him. 7\u00a0 And Saul said to his servants who stood about him, \u201cHear now, people of Benjamin; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, 8\u00a0 that all of you have conspired against me? No one discloses to me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you is sorry for me or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day.\u201d<br \/>\n9\u00a0 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, \u201cI saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub,<br \/>\n10\u00a0 and he inquired of the LORD for him and gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>ILLEGAL TRIAL<\/u> <u><br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 22:11-17 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n11\u00a0 Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father\u2019s house, the priests who were at Nob, and all of them came to the king.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 12\u00a0 And Saul said, \u201cHear now, son of Ahitub.\u201d And he answered, \u201cHere I am, my lord.\u201d 13\u00a0 And Saul said to him, \u201cWhy have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword and have inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?\u201d 16\u00a0 And the king said, \u201cYou shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father\u2019s house.\u201d 17\u00a0 And the king said to the guard who stood about him, \u201cTurn and kill the priests of the LORD, because their hand also is with David, and they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me.\u201d But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the LORD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deuteronomy 24:16 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n16\u00a0 \u201cFathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>EVIL MURDER<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 22:18-23 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n18\u00a0 Then the king said to Doeg, \u201cYou turn and strike the priests.\u201d And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod.<br \/>\n19\u00a0 And Nob, the city of the priests, he put to the sword; both man and woman, child and infant, ox, donkey and sheep, he put to the sword. 20\u00a0 But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 21\u00a0 And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD. 22\u00a0 And David said to Abiathar, \u201cI knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father\u2019s house. 23\u00a0 Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><i>The Steadfast Love of God Endures<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><i>To the choirmaster. A Maskil of David, when <\/i><i>Doeg<\/i><i>, the Edomite, came and told Saul, \u201cDavid has come to the house of Ahimelech.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/i><strong>Psalm 52:1-5 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1 Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all the day.<br \/>\n2\u00a0 Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit. 3\u00a0 You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah<br \/>\n4\u00a0 You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.<br \/>\n5\u00a0 But God will break you down forever; he will snatch and tear you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>DELIVERED TOWN<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 23:1-6 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1\u00a0 Now they told David, \u201cBehold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are robbing the threshing floors.\u201d 2\u00a0 Therefore David inquired of the LORD, \u201cShall I go and attack these Philistines?\u201d And the LORD said to David, \u201cGo and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.\u201d 3\u00a0 But David\u2019s men said to him, \u201cBehold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?\u201d 4\u00a0 Then David inquired of the LORD again. And the LORD answered him, \u201cArise, go down to Keilah, for I will give the Philistines into your hand.\u201d 5\u00a0 And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and struck them with a great blow. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah. 6\u00a0 When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech had fled to David to Keilah, he had come down with an ephod in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>UNGRATEFUL CROWD<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 23:7-13 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n7\u00a0 Now it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, \u201cGod has given him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering a town that has gates and bars.\u201d 8\u00a0 And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. 9\u00a0 David knew that Saul was plotting harm against him. And he said to Abiathar the priest, \u201cBring the ephod here.\u201d 10\u00a0 Then David said, \u201cO LORD, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city on my account. 11\u00a0 Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? O LORD, the God of Israel, please tell your servant.\u201d And the LORD said, \u201cHe will come down.\u201d 12\u00a0 Then David said, \u201cWill the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?\u201d And the LORD said, \u201cThey will surrender you.\u201d 13\u00a0 Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up the expedition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>ENCOURAGING FRIEND<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 23:14-18 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n14\u00a0 And David remained in the strongholds in the wilderness, in the hill country of the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.<br \/>\n15\u00a0 David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh. 16\u00a0 And Jonathan, Saul\u2019s son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God.<br \/>\n17\u00a0 And he said to him, \u201cDo not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Saul my father also knows this.\u201d<br \/>\n18\u00a0 And the two of them made a covenant before the LORD. David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>My Soul Thirsts for You<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><i>A Psalm of David, when he was in the<br \/>\nwilderness of Judah.<br \/>\n<\/i><strong>Psalm 63:1-4 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2\u00a0 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. 3\u00a0 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. 4\u00a0 So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Peter 5:8-10 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n8\u00a0 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.<br \/>\n9\u00a0 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.<br \/>\n10\u00a0 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 Peter 1:3-4 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n3\u00a0 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,<br \/>\n4\u00a0 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Story of David (Sermon series) \u00a0by Rev.
