And Ahimelech came to meet David trembling and said to him, \u201cWhy are you alone, and no one with you?\u201d 2\u00a0 And David said to Ahimelech the priest, \u201cThe king has charged me with a matter and said to me, \u2018Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.\u2019 I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place. 3\u00a0 Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.\u201d 4\u00a0 And the priest answered David, \u201cI have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread\u2014if the young men have kept themselves from women.\u201d 5\u00a0 And David answered the priest, \u201cTruly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?\u201d<br \/>\n6\u00a0 So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the LORD, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 7\u00a0 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD. His name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul\u2019s herdsmen. 8\u00a0 Then David said to Ahimelech, \u201cThen have you not here a spear or a sword at hand? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king\u2019s business required haste.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 9\u00a0 And the priest said, \u201cThe sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.\u201d And David said, \u201cThere is none like that; give it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark 2:23-28 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n23\u00a0 One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain.<br \/>\n24\u00a0 And the Pharisees were saying to him, \u201cLook, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?\u201d<br \/>\n25\u00a0 And he said to them, \u201cHave you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26\u00a0 how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?\u201d<br \/>\n27\u00a0 And he said to them, \u201cThe Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.<br \/>\n28\u00a0 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>ACTING TO ESCAPE<\/u>\u00a0<u><br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 21:10-12 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n10\u00a0 And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath.<br \/>\n11\u00a0 And the servants of Achish said to him, \u201cIs not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, \u2018Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands\u2019?\u201d<br \/>\n12\u00a0 And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13\u00a0 So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard.<br \/>\n14\u00a0 Then Achish said to his servants, \u201cBehold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me?<br \/>\n15\u00a0 Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><i>In God I Trust<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><i>To the choirmaster: according to The Dove on<br \/>\nFar-off Terebinths. A Miktam of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath.<br \/>\n<\/i><strong>Psalm 56:1-4 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1 Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me; all day long an attacker oppresses me; 2\u00a0 my enemies trample on me all day long, for many attack me proudly. 3\u00a0 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. 4\u00a0 In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Taste and See That the Lord Is Good<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><i>Of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.<br \/>\n<\/i><strong>Psalm 34:1-4 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1 I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2\u00a0 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad.<br \/>\n3\u00a0 Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together! 4\u00a0 I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>TEAM OF TROUBLED<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 22:1-2 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1\u00a0 David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father\u2019s house heard it, they went down there to him.<br \/>\n2\u00a0 And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>You Are My Refuge<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><i>A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave.<br \/>\nA Prayer<br \/>\n<\/i><strong>Psalm 142:1-6 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1 With my voice I cry out to the LORD; with my voice I plead for mercy to the LORD.<br \/>\n2\u00a0 I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him.<br \/>\n3\u00a0 When my spirit faints within me, you know my way! In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Chronicles 12:1-2 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1\u00a0 Now these are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he could not move about freely because of Saul the son of Kish. And they were among the mighty men who helped him in war.<br \/>\n2\u00a0 They were bowmen and could shoot arrows and sling stones with either the right or the left hand; they were Benjaminites, Saul\u2019s kinsmen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Chronicles 12:8 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n8\u00a0 From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were swift as gazelles upon the mountains:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>CARE FOR PARENTS<br \/>\n<\/u>1 Samuel 22:3-5 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n3\u00a0 And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, \u201cPlease let my father and my mother stay with you, till I know what God will do for me.\u201d 4\u00a0 And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 5\u00a0 Then the prophet Gad said to David, \u201cDo not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.\u201d So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Story of David (Sermon series) \u00a0by Rev.
