Richard Jones<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Part 1<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>John 18: 1-27<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-7338-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossroadchristianfellowship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/07-10-2022.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossroadchristianfellowship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/07-10-2022.mp3\">http:\/\/www.crossroadchristianfellowship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/07-10-2022.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>GRACE IN THE GARDEN<\/u> <u><br \/>\n<\/u>John 18:1-9 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n1\u00a0 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2\u00a0 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.<br \/>\n3\u00a0 So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4\u00a0 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, \u201cWhom do you seek?\u201d 5\u00a0 They answered him, \u201cJesus of Nazareth.\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cI am he.\u201d Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6\u00a0 When Jesus said to them, \u201cI am he,\u201d they drew back and fell to the ground. 7\u00a0 So he asked them again, \u201cWhom do you seek?\u201d And they said, \u201cJesus of Nazareth.\u201d 8\u00a0 Jesus answered, \u201cI told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.\u201d 9\u00a0 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: \u201cOf those whom you gave me I have lost not one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>VIOLENCE ON THE HILLSIDE<br \/>\n<\/u>John 18:10-14 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n10\u00a0 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest\u2019s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant\u2019s name was Malchus.) 11\u00a0 So Jesus said to Peter, \u201cPut your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?\u201d 12\u00a0 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13\u00a0 First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14\u00a0 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matthew 26:51-54 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n51\u00a0 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.<br \/>\n52\u00a0 Then Jesus said to him, \u201cPut your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53\u00a0 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? 54\u00a0 But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke 22:51-53 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n51\u00a0 But Jesus said, \u201cNo more of this!\u201d And he touched his ear and healed him.<br \/>\n52\u00a0 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, \u201cHave you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?<br \/>\n53\u00a0 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>John 11:49-52 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n49\u00a0 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, \u201cYou know nothing at all.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 50\u00a0 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.\u201d 51\u00a0 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,\u00a0 \u00a052\u00a0 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>\u00a0STUPIDITY BY THE FIRE<\/u> <u><br \/>\n<\/u>John 18:15-18 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n15\u00a0 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16\u00a0 but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17\u00a0 The servant girl at the door said to Peter, \u201cYou also are not one of this man\u2019s disciples, are you?\u201d He said, \u201cI am not.\u201d 18\u00a0 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>\u00a0TRUTH IN THE RESIDENCE<br \/>\n<\/u>John 18:19-24 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n19\u00a0 The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.<br \/>\n20\u00a0 Jesus answered him, \u201cI have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21\u00a0 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.\u201d 22\u00a0 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, \u201cIs that how you answer the high priest?\u201d 23\u00a0 Jesus answered him, \u201cIf what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?\u201d<br \/>\n24\u00a0 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>\u00a0COWARDICE IN THE COURTYARD<br \/>\n<\/u>John 18:25-27 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n25\u00a0 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, \u201cYou also are not one of his disciples, are you?\u201d He denied it and said, \u201cI am not.\u201d<br \/>\n26\u00a0 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, \u201cDid I not see you in the garden with him?\u201d<br \/>\n27\u00a0 Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke 22:56-62 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n56\u00a0 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, \u201cThis man also was with him.\u201d<br \/>\n57\u00a0 But he denied it, saying, \u201cWoman, I do not know him.\u201d<br \/>\n58\u00a0 And a little later someone else saw him and said, \u201cYou also are one of them.\u201d But Peter said, \u201cMan, I am not.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a059\u00a0 And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, \u201cCertainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.\u201d<br \/>\n60\u00a0 But Peter said, \u201cMan, I do not know what you are talking about.\u201d And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.<br \/>\n61\u00a0 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, \u201cBefore the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.\u201d<br \/>\n62\u00a0 And he went out and wept bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to John (Sermon series) \u00a0by Rev.
