“And the Curtain was Torn”<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Mark 15: 1-39<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

THE SILENCE OF JESUS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 15:1-5 (ESV) <\/b>
\n1 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.
\n2 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And Pilate asked him, \u201cAre you the King of the Jews?\u201d And he answered him, \u201cYou have said so.\u201d<\/span>
\n3 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And the chief priests accused him of many things.
\n4 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And Pilate again asked him, \u201cHave you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.\u201d
\n5 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Isaiah 53:7-8 (ESV) <\/b>
\n7 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth;<\/span> like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,<\/span> and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,<\/span> so he opened not his mouth.<\/span>
\n8 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered<\/span> that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

THE CHOICE OF THE MOB<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 15:6-15 (ESV) <\/b>
\n6 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.
\n7 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.
\n8 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.
\n9 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he answered them, saying, \u201cDo you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?\u201d
\n10 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.
\n11 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.
\n12 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And Pilate again said to them, \u201cThen what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?\u201d
\n13 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they cried out again, \u201cCrucify him.\u201d
\n14 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And Pilate said to them, \u201cWhy, what evil has he done?\u201d But they shouted all the more, \u201cCrucify him.\u201d
\n15 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

THE MOCKERY OF SOLDIERS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 15:16-20 (ESV) <\/b>
\n16 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor\u201d\u2122s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.
\n17 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
\n18 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they began to salute him, \u201cHail, King of the Jews!\u201d
\n19 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.
\n20 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

THE DRAMA OF THE CROSS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 15:21-27 (ESV) <\/b>
\n21 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.
\n22 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).
\n23 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
\n24 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.
\n25 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And it was the third hour when they crucified him.
\n26 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And the inscription of the charge against him read, \u201cThe King of the Jews.\u201d
\n27 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. \u00a0<\/b>
\n29 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, \u201cAha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
\n30 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0save yourself, and come down from the cross!\u201d
\n31 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, \u201cHe saved others; he cannot save himself.
\n32 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.\u201d Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

THE TRIUMPH OF GRACE<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 15:33-39 (ESV) <\/b>
\n33 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
\n34 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, \u201cEloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?\u201d<\/span> which means, \u201cMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?\u201d<\/span>
\n35 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And some of the bystanders hearing it said, \u201cBehold, he is calling Elijah.\u201d
\n36 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, \u201cWait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.\u201d
\n37 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.
\n38 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
\n39 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, \u201cTruly this man was the Son of God!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hebrews 10:19-23 (ESV) <\/b>
\n19 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,
\n20 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,
\n21 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
\n22 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
