THE GOSPEL OF MARK<\/strong><\/h2>\n

“Do You Have Ears?”<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Mark 4:1-32<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

DIFFERENT DIRT<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 4:1-9 (ESV) <\/b>
\n1 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.
\n2 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:
\n3 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0\u201cListen! Behold, a sower went out to sow.<\/span>
\n4 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it.<\/span>
\n5 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil.<\/span>
\n6 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away.<\/span>
\n7 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain.<\/span>
\n8 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.\u201d<\/span>
\n9 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he said, \u201cHe who has ears to hear, let him hear.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

PURPOSE OF THE PARABLES<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 4:10-12 (ESV) <\/b>
\n10 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.
\n11 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he said to them, \u201cTo you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables,<\/span>
\n12 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0so that<\/span> \u201cthey may indeed see but not perceive,<\/span> and may indeed hear but not understand,<\/span><\/span> lest they should turn and be forgiven.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 2:12-14 (ESV) <\/b>
\n12 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
\n13 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
\n14 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SOWER, SEED AND SOIL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 4:13-20 (ESV) <\/b>
\n13 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he said to them, \u201cDo you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?<\/span>
\n14 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0The sower sows the word.<\/span>
\n15 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.<\/span>
\n16 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy.<\/span>
\n17 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.<\/span>
\n18 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word,<\/span>
\n19 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.<\/span>
\n20 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

APPLY THE LIGHT<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 4:21-25 (ESV) <\/b>
\n21 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he said to them, \u201cIs a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand?<\/span>
\n22 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light.<\/span>
\n23 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.\u201d<\/span>
\n24 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he said to them, \u201cPay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.<\/span>
\n25 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

THE LIFE DYNAMIC<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 4:26-29 (ESV) <\/b>
\n26 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he said, \u201cThe kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.<\/span>
\n27 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how.<\/span>
\n28 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.<\/span>
\n29 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

THE BUSH THAT STARTED SMALL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mark 4:30-32 (ESV) <\/b>
\n30 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he said, \u201cWith what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it?<\/span>
\n31 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth,<\/span>
\n32 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
