Genesis 37<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

JACKET OF JEALOUSY<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Genesis 37:1-4 (ESV)
\n<\/strong>1 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Jacob lived in the land of his father\u201d\u2122s sojournings, in the land of Canaan. <\/span>
\n2 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father\u201d\u2122s wives. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father.
\n3 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors.
\n4 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

DREAMS OF DESTINY<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Genesis 37:5-11 (ESV)
\n<\/strong>5 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more.
\n6 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0He said to them, \u201cHear this dream that I have dreamed:
\n7 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.\u201d
\n8 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0His brothers said to him, \u201cAre you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?\u201d So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.
\n9 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, \u201cBehold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.\u201d
\n10 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, \u201cWhat is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?\u201d
\n11 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

PLOT FOR PUNISHMENT<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Genesis 37:12-20 (ESV)
\n<\/strong>12 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Now his brothers went to pasture their father\u201d\u2122s flock near Shechem.
\n13 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And Israel said to Joseph, \u201cAre not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.\u201d And he said to him, \u201cHere I am.\u201d
\n14 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0So he said to him, \u201cGo now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock, and bring me word.\u201d So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
\n15 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, \u201cWhat are you seeking?\u201d
\n16 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0\u201cI am seeking my brothers,\u201d he said. \u201cTell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.\u201d
\n17 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And the man said, \u201cThey have gone away, for I heard them say, \u201d\u02dcLet us go to Dothan.\u201d\u2122\u201d So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
\n18 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him.
\n19 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0They said to one another, \u201cHere comes this dreamer.
\n20 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

RESCUED BY REUBEN<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Genesis 37:21-24 (ESV)
\n<\/strong>21 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, \u201cLet us not take his life.\u201d
\n22 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And Reuben said to them, \u201cShed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him\u201d\u201d\u201dthat he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father.
\n23 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore.
\n24 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.<\/p>\n

Romans 8:28 (ESV)
\n<\/strong>28 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SILVER FOR SLAVERY<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Genesis 37:25-28 (ESV)
\n<\/strong>25 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt.
\n26 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Then Judah said to his brothers, \u201cWhat profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
\n27 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.\u201d And his brothers listened to him.
\n28 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.<\/p>\n

DRAMA OF DECEPTION<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Genesis 37:29-35 (ESV)
\n<\/strong>29 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes
\n30 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0and returned to his brothers and said, \u201cThe boy is gone, and I, where shall I go?\u201d
\n31 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Then they took Joseph\u201d\u2122s robe and slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.
\n32 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And they sent the robe of many colors and brought it to their father and said, \u201cThis we have found; please identify whether it is your son\u201d\u2122s robe or not.\u201d
\n33 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And he identified it and said, \u201cIt is my son\u201d\u2122s robe. A fierce animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces.\u201d
\n34 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Then Jacob tore his garments and put sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son many days.
\n35 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, \u201cNo, I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.\u201d Thus his father wept for him.<\/p>\n

BLOCK OF BEWILDERMENT<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Genesis 37:36 (ESV)
\n<\/strong>36 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.<\/p>\n

Isaiah 53:2-6 (ESV)
\n<\/strong>2 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground;<\/span> he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,<\/span> and no beauty that we should desire him.<\/span>
\n3 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;<\/span> and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.<\/span>
