font-size: small;\">5 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem,<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">6 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">7 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, \u201cBy what power or by what name did you do this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>AN ANSWER BY THE SPIRIT<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Acts 4:8-12 (ESV)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">8 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, \u201cRulers of the people and elders,<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">9 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed,<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">10 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead\u201d\u201dby him this man is standing before you well.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">11 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">12 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ephesians 1:13-14 (ESV)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">13 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">14 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Corinthians 12:13 (ESV)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">13 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body\u201d\u201dJews or Greeks, slaves or free\u201d\u201dand all were made to drink of one Spirit. <span class=\"ind\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke 12:11-12 (ESV)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">11 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"JesusWords\">And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say,<\/span><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">12 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"JesusWords\">for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 118:22-23 (ESV)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">22 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0The stone that the builders rejected <span class=\"poetry2\">has become the cornerstone.<\/span> <span class=\"poetry1\"><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">23 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0This is the LORD\u201d\u2122s doing; <span class=\"poetry2\">it is marvelous in our eyes.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Peter 2:6-8 (ESV)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">6 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0For it stands in Scripture: <span class=\"poetry1\">\u201cBehold, I am laying in Zion a stone,<\/span> <span class=\"poetry2\">a cornerstone chosen and precious,<\/span> <span class=\"poetry1\">and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"noindent\"><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">7 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, <span class=\"poetry1\">\u201cThe stone that the builders rejected<\/span> <span class=\"poetry2\">has become the cornerstone,\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">8 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0and <span class=\"poetry1\">\u201cA stone of stumbling,<\/span> <span class=\"poetry2\">and a rock of offense.\u201d<\/span> They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>A DILEMMA IN THE COUNCIL<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Acts 4:13-17 (ESV)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">13 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">14 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">15 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another,<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">16 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0saying, \u201cWhat shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">17 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>A CONVICTION OF THE APOSTLES<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Acts 4:18-22 (ESV)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">18 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">19 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But Peter and John answered them, \u201cWhether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge,<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">20 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.\u201d<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">21 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">22 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"JesusWords\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sermon by Rev.
