Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.<\/span><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">17 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"JesusWords\"><span class=\"versemode\">&#8220;<\/span>But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face<\/span><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">18 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"JesusWords\">so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees <i>what is done<\/i> in secret will reward you.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Definition of Fasting: I abstain in order to obtain.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><u>1. Fasting By Way Of Display<\/u><\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">16 \u00a0&#8220;Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><i>The &#8220;Use&#8221; Of Fasting<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>When we fast, first we create a spirit of humility, repentance, &amp; dependency on God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel 9:3-5 (NASB)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0So I gave my attention to the Lord God to seek <i>Him by<\/i> prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed and said, &#8220;Alas, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments,<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0we have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly and rebelled, even turning aside from Your commandments and ordinances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>As we fast, we focus on connecting with God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nehemiah 1:4-5 (NASB)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0When I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0I said, &#8220;I beseech You, O LORD God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who preserves the covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>As we fast, we pursue God and His purposes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Acts 13:2-3 (NASB)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, &#8220;Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><i>The &#8220;Abuse&#8221; Of Fasting<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>We abuse the act of fasting by desiring to get things from God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>We abuse the act of fasting by developing a spirit of self-righteousness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Luke 18:10-12 (NASB)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">10 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"JesusWords\">&#8220;Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.<\/span><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">11 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"JesusWords\"><span class=\"versemode\">&#8220;<\/span>The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: &#8216;God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.<\/span><br \/>\n<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">12 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"JesusWords\">&#8216;I fast twice a week; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Proverbs 27:19 (NASB)<br \/>\n<\/strong><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">19 <\/span><\/sup>\u00a0As in water face <i>reflects<\/i> face, <span class=\"poetry1\">So the heart of man <i>reflects<\/i> man.<\/span> <span class=\"poetry1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><u>2.
